Sidehill lies and your irons

Why your set should be tested on a slope.

· Dana Whitaker

Most fitting studios use a flat mat. The golf course is not flat. In Morgantown, it is hardly flat at all.

On a sidehill, the ball is above or below your feet. The club's lie matters more, because the sole sits at an angle to the ground. If the lie is wrong, the face points the wrong way.

What we do

We built a mat with a gentle slope and check how your clubs behave on it. It is not a perfect copy of a hillside, but it is much closer than a flat one.

If you play on hills, ask your fitter whether they test on one.
